This shot was taken from the Horsetail Falls trail which starts near the campgrounds at Mono Village on Upper Twin Lake.

The trail is a pretty easy hike if you don’t try to rush it. There are a few switchbacks back and forth along the ridge until you pop out in a small meadow speckled by silver snags - evidence of flooding from beaver dams in years past. To the south you will see the beautiful rolling falls in front of the towering Cleaver and Matterhorn peaks as the only separation between you and Yosemite Valley.

I’d recommend starting this hike at first light, as it takes almost a solid hour to make it to the meadow. In the spring and early summer there is much more water flowing down the falls, but be prepared for patches of snow and swarms of mosquitoes.

Note: As always, beware of bears. Do not feed them. Do not taunt them.

I am always breathing so hard when hiking the High Sierra that I often don’t take the time to stop and smell the roses. Ironically, while recovering from what I was sure was a heart attack or stroke, I looked down and noticed these bright white little wildflowers coming out from between large granite boulders. After doing my best to catch my breath, I clicked a few frames with some wonderful early morning light casting a nice glow on this one.

I can’t find my book of wildflowers anywhere. If you happen to know what this species is, please let me know.

I’ve been a player of jazz guitar since about my freshman year in high school. Moreover, I have been a fan of the amazing art of lutherie involved in building archtop guitars. One of the absolute best builders out there is a gentleman by the name of Steve Andersen out of Seattle, WA. If you are fortunate enough to have both money (not cheap) and patience (long waiting lists), I can’t recommend Steve’s work highly enough.

I had this custom guitar for several years until I decided to sell it in order to buy a sailboat. After kicking myself over the decision for years, I can’t tell you how happy I was to find it years later, owned by a reputable collector who was kind enough to sell it back to me. The natural beauty of the solid spruce top and gorgeously flamed maple back are perfectly complimented by solid ebony - hand carved with a designer’s eye for detail and aesthetics. I’ve never had a guitar that “sings” like this beautiful masterpiece.

She is quite a special instrument - Serial # 118, the first 18″ body he made, along with what I believe is one of the first graphite/ebony custom tailpieces, later only found on the “Emerald City” model.
